Rabbi Yannai was a first generation Eretz Yisroel Amora. He was a student of Rebbe Yehuda Hanasi and Rebbe Chiya. Rabbi Yannai was a cohen.

Rabbi Yannai was student of Rebbe Yehuda Hanasi. When his his teacher passed away, Rabbi Yani announced that the laws of priesthood preventing Kohanim from coming in contact with the dead did not apply that day and despite being a kohen himself, took part in the funeral.
