Rabbi Leib Baal HaYisurim was a leading student of Rabbi Shniur Zalman of Ladi. In his old age he moved to Israel and settled in Chevron, where he was one of the first from the Ashkenazi settlement of the city. After this he moved to Tzfat where he passed away on the 15th of Cheshvan 1837.

Rabbi Leib Baal Hayisurim is buried in the old Safed cemetery far out on the right hand side. Many people visit his Kever when Rosh Chodesh falls out on Fridays and recite the entire Tehlim.
