A 4th generation Tana and son of Rabbi Yossi Haglili. |
Rabbi Eliezer son of Rabbi Yossi Haglili was a forth generation Tana living during the 2nd century who was counted amongst the Sages of Usha. His main teacher was Rabbi Akiva and he was active in the generation following the Bar Cochva rebellion. Rabbi Eliezer ben Rabbi Yossi Haglili is mentioned only once in the Mishna, although he is mentioned in numerous Brisos throughout the Talmud and Midrashim. He is the author of the Baraisa of the Thirty-Two Rules in which the Torah can be hermeneutically interpreted.
[edit] Aguda
Rabbi Elazar ben Rabbi Shimon said in reference to Rabbi Eliezer ben Rabbi Yossi's Aggadic teachings; "when you come across them make your ears like a funnel".
[edit] Kever Rabbi Eliezer ben Rabbi Yossi Haglili
Rabbi Eliezer is buried in the outskirts of the village Dalton in North Israel, at the foot of the mountain containing the tomb of his father Rabbi Yossi. There is an opinion that his brother Rabbi Shmuel is buried in a cave half way down the mountain. Right across the road from Rabbi Eliezer is the kever of Hillel the Amora. In a number of sources and even on the Kever itself, it is attributed to a Rabbi Yishmoel ben Rabbi Yossi. However Rabbi Yossi Haglili had no son mentioned in any sources by this name, although Rabbi Yossi ben Chalafta did. Since all early pilgrims to tomb even those that attributed the grave to a 'Rabbi Yishmoel' state that he is a son of Rabbi Yossi Haglili who is buried above, it has been accepted that some people mistakenly listed Rabbi Yishmoel instead of Rabbi Eliezer.
