Avigayil's first appearance in Tanach is towards the end of the First Book of Shmuel. At that point she is married to Naval the Carmali, a wealthy landowner from the Tribe of Yehuda. Naval had very strong linage and was a descendent of Calev ben Yephoneh. While Naval himself lived in the city of Maon, he owned land in the Carmel, it was here that he would send his shepherds to raise and care for his large amount of sheep and goats.
