== Chabad ==
The founder of the Chabad Hassidic dynasty, Shneur Zalman of Liadi, established his Hassidic community in the town of Lubavitch in White Russia. This group of Hassidim is still known as the “Lubavitch” Hassidim but are also called the “Chabad” Hassidim because of the acronym that they chose to describe their philosophy -- “Chochma” -- wisdom -- “Bina” -- understanding -- and “Da’at” -- knowledge.

=== Chabad Origins in Tzfat ===
In the early 19th century the third Lubavitch Rebbe, the “Tzemach Tzedek,” purchased land in Tzfat in order to strengthen the Jewish community of the city. His followers built the “[[Tzemach Tzedek Synagogue Tzfat|Tzemach Tzedek]]”  synagogue on this land. There was never a large Chabad community in Tzfat historically and, through the years, the synagogue fell into disrepair.

In the early 1970s the seventh Lubavitch Rebbe, Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneerson, directed a core group of this followers to move to Tzfat and establish Chabad institutions and a [[Chabad in Safed|community infrastructure]]. In 1972 several families arrived in Tzfat and began to lay the groundwork for a large Chabad center. The Rebbe, during his lifetime, directed his followers to engage in outreach work with unaffiliated Jewish individuals. Many of the Tzfat institutions were established for just this purpose.

In the early 1990s the Rebbe directed his followers to begin renovations on the dilapidated Tzemach Tzedek Synagogue. When the renovations were completed, a “kollel” -- study hall for older men -- was opened in the synagogue. Several years afterward a group of Chabad rabbis inaugurated the Tememei Derech Yeshivah on the premises of the Tzemach Tzedek synagogue.

== Tememei Derech ==
Tememei Derech is a rabbinical seminary which provides a holistic approach to Torah study. In conjunction with Talmudic and legal study, students learn [[Kabbalah]], Hassidic philosophy and contemporary mysticism. The yeshivah emphasizes spirituality and analytical thought. The yeshivah is specifically structured to meet the needs of men who have little or no Jewish background but are interested in a more religious and spiritual life. The yeshivah’s courses and activities are all aimed at drawing these men into the fold of religious Judaism.

Students can study full or part-time at the yeshivah but most students who enroll at Tememei Derech study on a full-time basis. Coursework includes Talmud, Jewish Law, studies about the Messiah and Redemption, pair-study, Chabad/Hassidic Thought (using The Tanya as the text) and the Teachings of the Rebbe.
