Suede Material

Suede is a form of leather created from the underside of the animal skin. It is very soft and pliable and has a nap or brushed feel. Suede tallit and tefillin bags are normally made from kosher animals like lamb or young goats otherwise known as kids. Suede can also be made from cow or deer hide, or even a non-kosher animal like a pig but this would of course not be used for making tallit or tefillin bags. Nubuck is similar to suede but it comes from the outside of the hide, rather than the inside, and has similar properties.

Durability of Suede Pouches

Because suede is very soft and picks up the dirt easily it can easily get marked or stained, especially from liquids like water or wine. This means it is very important to keep a suede tallis bag in its plastic cover to prevent damage from the rain. However pre-treating suede with a special spray can help to preserve the bag from marks or water stains. This type of spray is usually available from shoe shops and should be used prior to using the bag for the first time. Genuine suede will last a long time, but doesn’t always age uniformly, and it normally only comes in natural colors.

Artificial Suede

There are several types of artificial suede or faux-suede.It was invented in Japan in 1970 and is a type of microfiber made from polyester, which is treated to resemble suede. The advantages of choosing one of these types of artificial suede, or ultrasuede for a tefilin bag is that it has all the feel of suede with few of the disadvantages. It is much more stain resistant than real suede and can be easily washed in the washing machine if it does get dirty, which is something that can’t be done with real suede. Unlike genuine suede ultrasuede comes in a variety of colors and it means that it is possible to make very attractive tallit and tefilin bags from this artificial fiber. Faux-suede is also normally cheaper than the real thing, and of course many people prefer to buy products which are not made from animals. The only real disadvantage of faux-suede is that it doesn’t last as long as the genuine article. However for most people this doesn’t matter as the advantages far outweigh this, especially as faux-suede is normally much cheaper than real suede. Faux-suede often looks much smarter as well which also makes it a good choice for tallis and tefillin bags.

Why Choose Suede?

There are many suede and faux-suede bags on the market designed to carry a tefilin and tallis. They can be easily personalized and unlike a cloth tallit bag, they are less likely to get torn. This type of bag can be combined with leather and even have a carry handle incorporated into the design, which makes it suitable for the busy executive. Suede is associated with luxury, and therefor because it is very difficult to tell the difference between suede and faux-suede at first glance, this fabric is also considered to be luxurious too.
