Rabbi Yackov Beirav was born in Spain 18 years before the expulsion. After leaving Spain he traveled Cairo and was appointed as a Dayan in the Beis Din of the Ridbaz, Rebbe Dovid ben Zimra.

Originally his family name was Marmach and he was given the name Berav to show his greatness in torah study.

Moved from Egypt to Tzfat.
