Description:
Luxury high-end pouches for a tallit and tefilin providing durability and professional look.

Leather Tefilin and Tallit bags have a luxury appearance and offer a durable cover for these Jewish ritual items. As technology improves, faux- leather, although less durable, becomes more difficult to distinguish from real leather, offering the same high-end look with a lower price tag. Other forms of leather Talit and Tefilin bags include suede and raw hide leather.

Leather Material

Leather is one of the oldest manufactured products in the world and it is extremely durable. Leather remains have been found in archaeological digs in Egypt and pictograms of the leather tanning process have been found in ancient Assyrian records. Although most leather today is made from cowhide, leather can be made from almost any type of animal hide available, including pig and fish skins. In all likelihood leather used to manufacture Tallis and Tefillin pouches come from kosher animals, generally cows.

Leather Manufacturing

One of the problems with the leather industry is that it can be very polluting due to the nature of the manufacturing process if it not properly regulated. Kanpur in Uttar Pradesh, northern India, which is one of the main centers of leather manufacturing in the world, was obliged to temporarily shut down 10% of its tanneries in 2009 due to environmental pollution. This means that responsible manufactures of leather goods, especially Judaica item like tefilin bags, may prefer to buy their leather from more sustainable sources, making their product more expensive.

Artificial Leather

Due to these environmental concerns many people prefer artificial leather, often marketed as leatherette, faux-leather or pleather. Manufactures of leather tefilin and tallit bags may offer the choice of real leather or faux-leather, and as technology improves it is often difficult to tell the difference, except by the price. This makes faux-leather suitable for someone who wants a luxury look product for a tefilin bag without the expense. Leatherette is less expensive than real leather, addresses animal rights concerns and needs much less maintenance. It is important not to leave real leather tefilin or tallit bags out in the hot sun or in very dry environments as this can lead to cracking or fading which doesn’t normally affect faux-leather. Real leather tallit bags need to be cleaned with saddle soap or shoe polish to remove stains, while pleather can often just be wiped down with a damp cloth, which is another reason some people prefer artificial leather for their tefilin bag.

Style & Design

Leather or leather look tefilin and tallit bags are very stylish and can be personalized with the owner’s name, as well as other designs. Manufacturers of leather tefilin and tallit bags often emboss designs of Jerusalem, the Wailing Wall (Kotel) on to their tallit bag sets. This look gives a very attractive appearance, while another luxury look uses gold or silver thread to embroider pictures or patterns on the bag. Leather tefilin bag sets can also be given a strap or handle making them suitable for the traveling executive. As they are considered high-end luxury items, a leather tefilin and tallis set also makes an ideal present for a Bar Mitzvah boy or wedding gift for the groom (chatan).
